Customized Care for Your Child
After each examination, your child will receive an individualized plan of care. The most common services provided are:
Preventive Care: We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines when determining the periodicity of preventive services and radiographs (X-rays). Preventive services include:
- Dental Examinations
- Dental Cleanings
- Fluoride Treatments
- Radiographs
- Oral Hygiene Instruction and Nutrition Counseling
- Sealants
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Treatment: In some situations, SDF treatment can be used to slow down or stop the growth of cavities until treatment can be rendered. Parents and patients should be aware that the cavity will stain black.
Fillings / Crowns: If your child has cavities, it may be necessary to restore your child back to dental health. Treatment may include:
- Composite (White) Fillings
- Stainless Steel Crowns (Silver Caps)
- Anterior Composite (White) Crowns
Pulpotomies (Baby Root Canals): When a cavity is near or into the nerve of a tooth, a baby root canal may be necessary to restore the tooth. Often a stainless steel crown (silver cap) is placed over the tooth.
Extractions: An extraction may be indicated due to a very deep cavity, infection, trauma or for orthodontic purposes.
Space Maintainers: If a baby molar needs to be extracted prematurely, a space maintainer will hold the space for the permanent tooth. It can save time and money on future orthodontic issues.
Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide or "laughing gas" is a colorless, odorless gas which can help reduce pain and anxiety. It is a very safe and effective tool we can use to keep your child comfortable for certain procedures.
Sedation Dentistry: Sometimes sedation is indicated to safely restore children back to dental health. General anesthesia services are available at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital and Pediatric Specialists of Virginia (PSV) Ambulatory Surgery Center. Both centers are located in Fairfax, VA.
